The long, difficult trip down the aisle
Latin America celebrated its first gay wedding last week, but it was a long and difficult journey for Alejandro Freyre and Jose Maria Di Bello to marry.
After being issued a marriage license, the Argentinian couple, who are both HIV positive, were to be married on December 1st, World AIDS Day. But in a last minute decision, the Mayor of Buenos Aires announced their marriage would not be recognized, sparking a battle between equal rights and old world attitudes.
In the end, love won the day, when the couple was granted a special Governor's decree and tied the knot on Dec 28. Gay marriage remains illegal in pro-Catholic Argentina, but the tide is turning, thanks to Alejandro, Jose and their supporters.
